How to Write a Lesson Note in Nigeria (NERDC Format + Free Template)

A Nigerian lesson note is the teacher's classroom contract. It tells you what topic you will teach, what the learners must be able to do by the end of the period, how you will get them there, and how you will know if it worked. Get it right and the rest of teaching becomes easier. Get it wrong and even a great teacher looks lost during inspection. This guide walks through the NERDC nine-part format, shows you a full JSS 1 Mathematics example, and ends with the few pitfalls inspectors flag most often.

1. What a Nigerian lesson note is for

The Nigerian lesson note exists for three audiences, in this order. First, it is for the learner. The structure forces you to sequence ideas in a way a child can absorb in 40 minutes. Second, it is for the substitute. Any colleague should be able to pick up your note and deliver the lesson. Third, it is for the inspector: proof that you are aligned with the NERDC scheme of work and the school's term plan.

Schools that treat the lesson note as a formality (copying last year's notes wholesale, dating them, and dropping them in the HOD's tray) usually have the worst classroom outcomes. The note is a thinking tool first, a compliance tool second.

2. The NERDC 9-part structure (the canonical order)

Across federal unity schools, state public schools, and private schools, the lesson note follows the same nine parts. The order matters. Moving Evaluation before Presentation, for example, signals that the teacher does not understand the flow.

  1. Topic. Copy verbatim from the NERDC scheme of work for that week.
  2. Class & Duration. For example, "JSS 1, 40 minutes". Always state the class level, not just the form.
  3. Behavioural (Learning) Objectives: what learners will be able to do, written in observable action verbs.
  4. Instructional Materials: every aid you will use, from chalk and chart paper to the projector or smartboard slide.
  5. Previous Knowledge / Entry Behaviour: what the learner already knows that you will build on.
  6. Set Induction: the first 3–5 minutes that hook attention. Often listed inside Presentation; better called out separately.
  7. Presentation (Instructional Procedure): the step-by-step delivery, numbered.
  8. Evaluation: the questions or tasks you use in the last 5–7 minutes to check learning.
  9. Assignment: the task learners take home and hand in next class.

3. Annotated JSS 1 Mathematics example

Here is a full lesson note for JSS 1 Mathematics, Week 5 of the NERDC scheme: Lowest Common Multiple (LCM). Annotations are in italics underneath each part.

Topic: Lowest Common Multiple (LCM) of two and three numbers.

Class & Duration: JSS 1 · 40 minutes.

Behavioural Objectives. By the end of the lesson learners should be able to:
(i) define the lowest common multiple in their own words;
(ii) list the first five multiples of any number between 2 and 12;
(iii) calculate the LCM of any two single-digit numbers using the multiples method;
(iv) calculate the LCM of three single-digit numbers using prime factorisation.

Instructional Materials. Chart of times-table up to 12, two coloured markers, projector slide deck (15 slides), worksheet of 8 practice questions.

Previous Knowledge. Learners can already recite multiplication tables 1–12 from JSS 1 Week 2.

Set Induction (3 min). Ask: "If two buses leave the park together, one every 4 minutes and one every 6 minutes, when do they leave together again?" Take three answers, do not correct yet.

Presentation (28 min).
Step 1 (5 min): Define multiple. Write the first five multiples of 4 and 6 on the board.
Step 2 (6 min): Circle the common ones (12, 24). Define LCM as the smallest. Return to the bus question.
Step 3 (8 min): Work two more examples with the class: LCM(3, 5) and LCM(8, 12).
Step 4 (9 min): Introduce prime factorisation for three numbers: LCM(2, 3, 4) using prime factors.

Evaluation (5 min). Worksheet questions 1–5. Walk the room. Correct on the board.

Assignment. Worksheet questions 6–8 plus one real-life LCM problem of the learner's own invention. Due next lesson.

Two things to notice. First, every behavioural objective is testable: you can watch a child do it. Second, the times sum to 40 minutes; if you cannot allocate time to each step, your lesson is over-scoped.

4. Set induction: the 3 minutes that decide the lesson

Set induction is the on-ramp. Inspectors flag lessons that skip it because without an anchor question, the first ten minutes are spent settling rather than learning. Good set inductions are always one of three things:

  • A puzzle that uses the new concept. Like the bus example above for LCM.
  • A demonstration that breaks intuition. Floating a paperclip on water to introduce surface tension in Basic Science.
  • A linked story. "Yesterday in the news, Dangote Refinery produced its first barrel of jet fuel. What is jet fuel made of?" before a Chemistry lesson on hydrocarbons.

5. Writing a strong Presentation section

The Presentation section is where new teachers struggle most. The fix is to write it in numbered steps with a time allocation per step, like the JSS 1 Maths example. Any step longer than ten minutes is probably two steps in disguise. Any lesson with fewer than three steps is probably a chalk-and-talk session and will lose the class around minute 14.

Verbs in the Presentation section should match the behavioural objectives. If your objective says learners will calculate, your presentation must include a step where they actually calculate, not just watch you do it.

6. Evaluation and Assignment

Evaluation is the in-class quick check, usually three to five questions answered in the last five to seven minutes. It must hit every behavioural objective at least once. If you wrote four objectives you need at least four evaluation items.

Assignment is the take-home extension. The best assignments push the concept slightly further than the lesson did, but not pure repetition and not a leap into next week. Real-life applications work especially well: design an LCM puzzle, measure the LCM of two events at home, find an example of cell division in a kitchen vegetable.

7. Primary, JSS, and SS differences

The nine-part structure is the same across all three levels, but the weighting shifts:

  • Primary (UBE 1–6). Heavier set induction, shorter presentation, more repetition. Evaluation often oral.
  • JSS (1–3). The balanced format shown above. Two objectives per lesson is the sweet spot; four is the absolute maximum.
  • SS (1–3). Longer Presentation, often a board of worked examples, plus an explicit link to the relevant WAEC/NECO past-question pattern. Many SS teachers add a tenth section called Examination Link naming the past papers where the topic appeared.

8. State variations (Lagos LASUBEB, FCT, etc.)

Some state ministries impose extra fields on top of the NERDC nine. The two that come up most:

  • Lagos LASUBEB for public-school primary and JSS adds a "Strands and Sub-strands" header before the topic and an explicit "Differentiation" section that describes how the lesson will be adjusted for advanced and struggling learners. The behavioural objectives must also map to the Lagos UBE framework codes.
  • FCT public schools require an explicit "Subject Teacher / HOD / VP-Academics" signature block at the bottom, and the note must be in a hard-cover lesson-note book, not loose printed sheets.

Private schools normally only need the standard NERDC format. Check your state's current circular before printing template books.

9. The pet-peeves inspectors flag every term

  • Objectives using "know", "understand", "appreciate" instead of observable verbs.
  • Topic that does not match the NERDC scheme week.
