AI in the Nigerian Classroom: What Works, What Doesn't (2026)
Most Nigerian teachers spend five to ten hours per week on lesson prep: handwriting notes, drawing diagrams, hunting old past questions, photocopying assignments. That time does not improve teaching. - Pastoral care. Detecting that a student is withdrawn, struggling at home, or being bullied is a teacher's job.
- Curriculum design. The NERDC scheme of work should be designed by humans (NERDC). AI helps you teach it; it should not invent it.
4. NERDC alignment risk, and how to mitigate it
A generic LLM that has never seen the Nigerian curriculum will draft a confident lesson note on "Photosynthesis for JSS 2 Biology". The note will read fluently. It will also be wrong in subtle ways: the topic may belong to JSS 3 in the current NERDC scheme, the behavioural objectives will use American verbs, the examples will be about maple trees instead of palm trees.
That is the alignment risk. A note that fails inspection because the scheme has shifted is worse than no AI at all. The mitigations:
- Use AI that is grounded in the current NERDC scheme. Not just trained on it once, but actively referencing it at generation time.
- Always have a teacher review. Treat AI output as a first draft, not a final document.
- Audit one note per teacher per week. The HOD spot-checks for scheme alignment, behavioural-objective verbs, and Nigerian examples.
- Choose vendors that publish their alignment source. If a vendor cannot show you which NERDC document version they map to, do not trust their output.
5. Slide generation in 60 seconds
The single most popular AI feature among Nigerian teachers is automatic smartboard slide generation. 11. A 30-day implementation plan
The pattern that has produced the smoothest rollouts:
