The NERDC format demands nine distinct parts (class, topic, behavioural objectives, instructional materials, entry behaviour, presentation in steps, evaluation, assignment, and reference), and every part has to read like a real teacher wrote it, not a template. Behavioural objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to: (1) count and write numbers up to one billion in figures and in words; (2) identify the place value of each digit in a multi-digit whole number; (3) compare two whole numbers and state which is greater using <, =, >.
Instructional materials
Place-value chart (printed A3), number cards showing 0–9, the board, chalk / marker, and the recommended NERDC JSS 1 Mathematics textbook (chapter 1).
Entry behaviour
Students can read and write whole numbers up to one thousand from primary school. The teacher confirms this with two quick oral questions before proceeding.
Presentation (4 steps)
  1. Introduce the place-value chart on the board: ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten-thousands, hundred-thousands, millions, ten-millions, hundred-millions, billions.
  2. Work an example together: write 23,408,716 on the board and read it out digit by digit using the chart. Have two students come up and place number-cards in the correct columns for a different number.
  3. Class activity: in pairs, students write five large numbers from a word list (e.g. "twelve million, four hundred thousand, seven hundred and twelve") into the place-value chart in their exercise books.
  4. Comparison drill: the teacher writes pairs of numbers on the board and students call out which is greater, justifying using place value.
Evaluation
Five quick board questions answered in exercise books: write the place value of the underlined digit, write the number in words, write the number in figures, and compare two numbers using < or >.

Exercises 1a–1d from the recommended NERDC JSS 1 Mathematics textbook (chapter 1, page 6). Marked at the start of next lesson.

Why this isn't just a generic AI prompt

What NERDC actually requires

The Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) sets the format that inspectors, principals, and supervising teachers grade lesson notes against. The standard format has nine parts in a fixed order. The opening header carries the administrative detail (school, class, subject, topic, sub-topic, date, period, and duration) and is followed by behavioural objectives. Objectives have to be written in the SMART pattern: specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, time-bound, and starting with action verbs from Bloom's taxonomy ("define", "calculate", "compare", "explain") rather than fuzzy verbs like "understand" or "know".

Instructional materials come next (what physical or digital aids you'll use), and then entry behaviour, which is the prerequisite knowledge you're assuming the class already has. NERDC asks for the actual presentation of the lesson to be broken down into clear sequential steps, three to five typically, with each step linked to one or more of your objectives. Evaluation is the in-class check: oral questions, board exercises, or a short worksheet that demonstrates the objectives were met. The assignment extends the work outside class, and the reference closes the document with the textbook chapter and the NERDC curriculum line you're teaching against.

What trips most teachers up is consistency. A note that has solid objectives but a presentation that doesn't actually deliver those objectives, or an evaluation that tests something the lesson never covered, will be rejected by a supervising teacher and isn't useful in the classroom anyway.
